Burstow & Hewett Auctioneers in Battle are hosting a specialist auction of all things weird but wonderful.
The Science, Natural History & Curiosities auction is to be held on the 9th August 2024 at The Granary Saleroom, opposite Battle train station. With nearly 600 meticulously curated lots ranging from the quirky to the macabre, this auction promises a captivating journey into the unusual.
Among the eclectic offerings are taxidermy specimens, including a full mount African Lion and a rare and impressive Bengal Tiger Head by Rowland Ward, 1894, human skulls and bones , wet specimens and an Ancient Egyptian mummified hand, collected by Rev. Arthur William Bedford whilst on The Grand Tour in May 1897. There is also a rare and early precision CURTA calculator by Contina AG Mauren - a type I, number 8153 model and a collection of microscopes, ensuring there is something to intrigue every collector and enthusiast.
The sale also includes a stunning collection of ammonites and fossils, and an Extinct Blue Megalodon Shark tooth. The Megalodon (Otodus megalodon) meaning "big tooth", is an extinct species of mackerel shark. The largest shark to have ever existed, it lived between 23 to 3.6 million years ago, from the Early Miocene to the Pliocene epochs. It was previously thought to be a close relative of the Great White Shark, and although taxonomically it has changed, it is believed that it resembled a Giant Great White.
Burstow & Hewett Auctioneers will host open viewings at The Granary Saleroom on Monday 5th August-Thursday 8th August from 9 am to 5 pm. The catalogue, featuring detailed descriptions and images of each item, is available to view on www.burstowandhewett.co.uk now.
The auction itself will commence at 9:30am on Friday 9th August, offering both in-person attendance at The Granary Saleroom and live online bidding for those unable to attend in person.
